New Project Creates Unique, Accessible Housing Option In Brandon For Seniors And People With Mobility Limitations

Newly designed housing units that are more accessible for seniors and people with mobility limitations have been developed with $375,500 in provincial funding, Family Services and Housing Minister Christine Melnick and Theresa Oswald, minister responsible for seniors, announced today.

"I am pleased to be part of the official opening resulting from this unique partnership that has created a new, affordable housing concept that better suits the accessibility needs of seniors and people with disabilities," said Melnick, who is also minister responsible for persons with disabilities and the Manitoba Housing and Renewal Corporation.

The funding supported the completion of the project which included substantial renovations to create 10 newly designed supportive housing units at Princess Park at 249 Ninth St. in Brandon. The site is a 73-unit seniors' housing facility owned by the Manitoba Housing and Renewal Corporation and managed by the Manitoba Housing Authority.

The entire project was completed in consultation with key stakeholders including the Brandon Regional Health Authority, Manitoba Family Services and Housing, Manitoba Health, the Manitoba Housing and Renewal Corporation and the Manitoba Housing Authority.

"Through this partnership, people who want to maintain their independence but require supports can remain in their community, as this new approach will provide appropriate care and support services to meet their needs," said Oswald, who is also Healthy Living Minister.

"This integrated housing model is the result of a collaborative effort, involving numerous stakeholders, and addresses the need to increase co-ordination and develop formal processes to support people who require assistance to access and maintain housing," said Carmel Olson, CEO, Brandon Regional Health Authority.

The project in Brandon was launched in 2003. Design of the more accessible housing units was done in collaboration with community groups, MCM Architects Inc., Ten Ten Sinclair and the Transitional Living Centre.
