Province Provides Funding To Rossbrook House For Programming For Children And Youth

A $20,000 grant to Rossbrook House was announced today by Education, Citizenship and Youth Minister Peter Bjornson.

"Our government is pleased to support Rossbrook House in its efforts to provide a safe, welcoming environment and alternative programs for

Winnipeg youth," Bjornson said. "Rossbrook House is well-respected in the community for its excellent work with children and youth."

Rossbrook House was founded in 1976 and is open 365 days a year. Children and youth are also welcome on weekends and during the summer months when the facility is open 24 hours a day.

"Students feel comfortable in the home-like atmosphere where they have access to breakfast and lunch programs and other services that contribute to their academic success," Bjornson said. "Activities are designed to help them develop their gifts and talents as well as their studies."

Through Rossbrook House's school programs, Wi Wabigooni, Eagles' Circle and Rising Sun, students can access Winnipeg School Division classes at the elementary, middle and senior levels. Advantages of the programs include smaller class sizes and the flexibility to accommodate students who may have difficulty in mainstream schools.

Manitoba Family Services and Housing also provides funding of $228,200 to Rossbrook House comprising $80,100 from the Family Support Innovations Fund and a general grant of $148,100.

"Students may be facing issues such as poverty, hunger, poor housing and drug use, and others are coping with new babies or sick children," said Family Services and Housing Minister Christine Melnick. "Rossbrook House allows them to work at their own pace and achieve success."
