Week Recognizes Contributions Of Co-Ops

Agriculture, Food and Rural Initiatives Minister Rosann Wowchuk today proclaimed Oct. 18 to 23 as Co-op Week in Manitoba in recognition of the contributions co-operatives have made to the lives of Manitobans.

"The co-operative spirit Manitobans exhibit through credit unions, caisse populaires and a variety of co-op business ventures can be credited for the success of many social and economic developments in our province," said Wowchuk. "Owned and controlled by those who use their products and services, co-ops are living proof of the strength of a community when its members join together in a single purpose."

Co-op Week in Manitoba is part of the national celebration which this year carries the theme Youth - the Future of Co-operation.

"Manitobans in both rural and urban communities have come to appreciate the benefits of member-owned business and banking ventures," said the minister. "Their combined purchasing power allows members to access products, programs and financial services at competitive rates and a share of the profits that result."

The minister further noted that this year's theme encourages youth to get involved actively in their communities while promoting the benefits of financial co-operation.

In 2003, in support of co-operative programs, the province launched a web site at http://www.co-ops.mb.ca on the advantages and processes of developing a co-operative organization.

There are more than 415 co-operatives, credit unions and caisse populaires in Manitoba comprising more than 800,000 voting members who control close to $10 billion in assets and $5 billion in annual revenues.
