December Co-Op Housing Forum To Profile User-Friendly Solution To Housing Challenges

December Co-Op Housing Forum To Profile User-Friendly Solution To Housing Challenges

A co-op housing forum scheduled for Dec. 2 and 3 will provide an opportunity for Manitobans to learn more about the advantages and financial benefits of co-operative housing, Agriculture, Food and Rural Initiatives Minister Rosann Wowchuk and Family Services and Housing Minister Christine Melnick announced today.

"The very nature of a co-operative organization means the power of each individual member is magnified by the total membership," said Wowchuk. "Under the leadership of an elected board, the decisions affecting a co-op housing complex can be adapted to meet the changing needs of the membership."

The forum will take place at the Union Centre, 275 Broadway, Winnipeg.

"The goal of the forum is to stimulate new co-op housing development by bringing together funding organizations, builders, neighbourhood renewal organizations and those interested in developing new co-op housing in Manitoba," said Melnick. "Housing co-ops offer purchasing power and greater flexibility plus more choices for members."

The forum is sponsored by the Manitoba Housing Renewal Corporation, the Co-operative Development Services unit of Manitoba Agriculture, Food and Rural Initiatives and the Co-operative Housing Federation.

Topics include a panel on the past, present and future of Manitoba co-op housing, an introduction to co-op housing for newcomers, and information about building, maintaining and financing housing co-ops and developing member and board skills.
