Province Announces Major Investment For Portage La Prairie's Manitoba Developmental Centre

PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE—Family Services and Housing Minister Christine Melnick announced here today a multi-year plan to invest approximately $40 million to redevelop the Manitoba Developmental Centre (MDC) and enhance the living environment for its residents.

"We are pleased to launch these long-term plans to modernize the facility," said Melnick, who is also minister responsible for persons with disabilities. "This multi-year project will enhance the quality of life of people with significant disabilities who require the specialized care, supervision and unique programming at the centre."

The 100-acre site currently has 23 buildings and cottages constructed at various times over the years as the centre has expanded. The long-term project will see selected facilities at the centre redeveloped for immediate and long-term use. Plans include construction of a new, 40-bed unit attached to the Westgrove facility and a second
80-bed unit linking the Westgrove building to the Aspen Centre. The older Southgrove and Eastgrove structures will be vacated as the new beds are completed.

The renewal project will also see the Westgrove building upgraded to provide more privacy for residents and to meet current fire and safety code requirements. Cottages on the site will be upgraded as required for participants of the Specialty Care and Habilitation programs.

"With construction of new areas and redevelopment of obsolete space, residents with mental disabilities or complex medical conditions will benefit from a modernized living space while their needs for accessibility, privacy and dignity will be better met," said Melnick.

"We are pleased to be working with the centre and community on a plan to redevelop this important facility," said Transportation and Government Services Minister Ron Lemieux. "As it progresses through the various phases, we will co-ordinate our efforts with the staff to ensure the transition is as smooth as possible for the residents."

Established in 1890, the accredited residential care facility is committed to the principles of resident-centred services. MDC provides a variety of activities for its clients including art classes, music, drama and sensory stimulation. The centre is home to approximately 400 adults and is one of Portage La Prairie's largest employers with approximately 750 staff. In 2002, MDC received a Manitoba Service Excellence Award for a centre-wide recycling initiative.
