Gardens on Tenth Expansion to Offer 66 Assisted Living Units: Minister Bjornson

ALTONA—New housing that will provide quality and accessible homes for seniors in the Altona area will receive assistance from the Manitoba government, Housing and Community Development Minister Peter Bjornson announced here today.

The project, called Gardens on Tenth, is led by a community non-profit charitable organization and is located at 141 10th Ave. NE in Altona.

“High-quality, affordable housing is vitally important so Manitobans can continue to live in their own communities during their retirement years,” said Minister Bjornson.  “I would like to thank the board of Gardens on Tenth for their hard work in meeting the needs of local seniors and their families.”

The new, high-quality homes will offer accessibility for seniors and will receive rent supplement assistance from the Manitoba government.  The support, more than $359,000 per year, will allow up to 44 units to be rented at levels determined to be affordable for Altona.

“We are very pleased to receive this type of support for a new seniors housing community,” said David Wiebe, board chair, Gardens on Tenth.  “Having many of our new suites eligible for rent supplement assistance is huge for our future tenants.”

Construction began last November on the four-storey, 66-unit building, with occupancy scheduled for the spring of 2015, the minister said.

The project has 35 one-bedroom and 31 two-bedroom units and will include a new commercial kitchen that will also provide services for an additional 52 suites located in the same complex.

Affordable homes are a key component of Manitoba Housing and Community Development’s overall strategy to construct 500 more social housing units and 500 new affordable rental units over the next three years, in addition to 1,500 social housing and 1,500 affordable housing units on schedule for 2014.

The minister said more information on Manitoba’s investments in the future with a vision of strong, healthy communities where individuals and families thrive is available at www.gov.mb.ca/housing/.
