Manitoba Government Announces New Judge Appointed to Provincial Court

Attorney General Andrew Swan today announced the appointment of Alain Huberdeau to the provincial court.

“Judge Huberdeau’s experience as a respected community leader will serve him well in this new position as he works on behalf of all Manitobans,” said Swan.  “He brings a unique understanding and appreciation for Manitoba’s north, along with his commitment to the law.”

Huberdeau received his law degree from the University of Moncton in 1996 and has served in private practice in northern Manitoba since that time with Law North LLP.  He has provided pro bono legal services to a number of community organizations including the Thompson Humane Society, Our Home Kikinaw and the Thompson Housing Agency.

In January 2014, he received the Community Involvement Award from the Manitoba Bar Association.  Huberdeau is currently the president of the Thompson Community Foundation, a charitable endowment fund in support of community projects, and the president of the Comité scolaire pour l’école communitaire la Voie du Nord, which established the first French school in Thompson.  He has previously served as a founding member of Spirit Way Inc., a 2.5-kilometre trail highlighting Thompson’s historical, cultural and artistic points of interest.

The new judge was selected from a list of candidates recommended by an independent judicial nominating committee.  The committee was chaired by Ken Champagne, the chief judge of the provincial court of Manitoba, and included three community representatives, representatives of the Law Society of Manitoba and the Manitoba branch of the Canadian Bar Association, and a provincial court judge.

The appointment iseffective immediately and an official swearing-in ceremony will be scheduled as soon as possible.
