Province Issues Severe Wind Alerts for Lake Winnipeg, Areas of Lake Manitoba



Manitoba Infrastructure and Transportation’s Hydrologic Forecasting Centre reports that forecast high winds for tomorrow have resulted in a wind warning ranging from high to severe for the South Basin of Lake Winnipeg and a moderate-to-severe wind warning for the south basin of Lake Manitoba.

North winds are forecast to increase throughout the day tomorrow increasing up to 85 km/hr tomorrow morning.  Wind speed is forecast to remain between 55 to 75 km/hr throughout the weekend until Tuesday and will diminish late in the day.

Wind speed and direction could raise levels by as much as five feet or greater along the south shore of Lake Winnipeg and on the south shore of Lake Manitoba.  In addition, these winds can result in significant wave action on shorelines.

Lake Manitoba is currently at 814.19 ft., while the South Basin of Lake Winnipeg was last measured at 715.64 ft.

Property owners are advised to take precautions.
