Province Issues Severe Wind Alerts for Lake Winnipeg, Areas of Lake Manitoba

Manitoba Infrastructure and Transportation’s Hydrologic Forecasting Centre reports that forecast high north-northwest winds developing this afternoon and evening and continuing into tomorrow have resulted in a severe wind warning for the South Basin of Lake Winnipeg and a high wind warning for the south basin of Lake Manitoba.

Lake Manitoba is currently at 813.64 feet while the South Basin of Lake Winnipeg was last measured at 714.8 ft.

Winds are forecast to increase up to 55 km/h this evening and into tomorrow morning.  Wind speed and direction could raise levels by as much as five feet or more along the south shore of Lake Winnipeg and on the south shore of Lake Manitoba.  In addition, these winds can result in significant wave action on shorelines.  There is also the potential for shoreline ice pileup.

Property owners are advised to take precautions.
