Funding for Futurpreneurs Canada will Stimulate Entrepreneurship, Deliver Web-based Training to Skilled Tradespeople: Minister Chief

BRANDON—Continued support for young entrepreneurs was announced at Brandon University today by Jobs and the Economy Minister Kevin Chief.

“Young people are looking to start businesses that allow them to give back to their hometowns,” said Minister Chief.  “This funding shows them there are mentors ready to help get that innovative new approach, product or idea off the ground.”

The Manitoba government is investing $200,000 in Futurpreneur Canada, a program that supports entrepreneurs aged 18 to 39.

The minister said the funding announced today will be directed toward hiring a new business development officer that will work with young entrepreneurs across the province to build their businesses and connect them with mentors.  As well, the funding will be used to develop and deliver a new series of business webinars for tradespeople interested in starting a business, such as applicants to the Manitoba government’s Journeyperson Business Start Program, he added.

“The energy of Manitoba’s young entrepreneurs is contagious.  We’re so excited this funding will help young people capitalize on their skills, and profit from doing good work in their communities,” said Joelle Foster, director, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Nunavut and Northwest Territoriesfor Futurpreneur Canada.

Futurpreneur Canada is a national non-profit organization that provides young entrepreneurs with coaching, startup financing, business resources and mentorship.  In 2014, Futurpreneur helped fund 45 Manitoba businesses.

“Receiving support from the Manitoba government and Futurpreneur Canada helped me establish my organic food store, and people have embraced the products and services we offer in the community,” said Lisa Zolinski, owner of the Fresh Carrot in Gimli, which was established in 2012.
