Manitoba Government Converts 118-unit Building to Help Seniors Live Independently

Ellice Place to Offer Long-Term Housing Option for Lower-Income Seniors to Age in Place: Minister Saran

The Manitoba government is investing $11 million to redevelop Ellice Place, the first building in the province to combine social housing and assisted living services for seniors, Housing and Community Development Minister Mohinder Saran and Healthy Living and Seniors Minister Deanne Crothers announced today.

“There is a real need for this project in our province, which is a unique combination of social housing and daily living services and supports,” said Minister Saran.  “This investment will create a welcoming and supportive community.  We are proud to lead the way with this new housing option for seniors.”

Ellice Place, located at 555 Ellice St., is a long-term housing option for Winnipeg seniors ages 65 and older who are able to live independently and do not require the medical care provided in a personal care home, but need some assistance with daily tasks.  Rents will be geared to income and a service package, including meals, linen service, light housekeeping and recreational activities, will be provided to all tenants, Minister Saran said.

“Manitoba’s seniors want to remain engaged with their families, their communities and other supports for as long as possible,” said Minister Crothers.  “Ellice Place recognizes that some seniors just need help to make this a reality.  It’s a welcome and unique addition to the many housing options and services available in our province.”

All 118 newly renovated units are being designed to include safety bars in bathrooms, 24-hour in-suite emergency devices and security cameras throughout the building.  The province is working with the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority to deliver home care services to tenants who will require them.

Other building features will include:

  • lobby and reception area for residents and visitors,
  • common kitchen area and dining room,
  • lounge and recreation areas, and
  • front-desk reception and property management.

Minister Saran noted Ellice Place is expected to open in early 2016.  Prospective tenants are invited to call 204-948-2328, email ellice.shal@gov.mb.caor visit www.gov.mb.ca/housing/mh/progs/shal.html for more information.
