Arrest Brings Justice Closer for Tina, Her Family: Minister Irvin-Ross

The Manitoba government commends the Winnipeg Police Service for making an arrest in the murder of Tina Fontaine and hopes this brings some measure of peace to Tina’s family, Family Services Minister Kerri Irvin-Ross said today.

“The cowardly murder of Tina Fontaine ended the dreams of a young life, was devastating for her family and shocked all of Canada,” said Minister Irvin-Ross.  “The Winnipeg Police Service and other police departments deserve immense credit and the thanks of all Manitobans for their diligence in pursuing a challenging case and bringing justice closer for this young child, her family and everyone who cared for her.”

Minister Irvin-Ross said the Manitoba government will continue implementing profound changes to the child and family services (CFS) system that will better protect children.  The province has also recently introduced legislation that would greatly increase the role of Indigenous communities in supporting families and reduce the number of children being taken into CFS care.

“Our government has made it a high priority to call for an inquiry into missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls,” said Minister Irvin-Ross.  “We were pleased to see the federal government move quickly toward the formation of a national inquiry.  Tina’s life and tragic death reaffirm our commitment to exploring every avenue to end the violence towards women and girls in our communities.”
