Affordable Local Housing Improves Seniors' Quality of Life: Minister Saran

DUGALD—A new, safe and affordable housing option based on co-operative values will benefit seniors in Dugald and the surrounding region, Housing and Community Development Minister Mohinder Saran announced here today at the grand opening of the $14.4-million Dugald Estates.

“This property provides local seniors with a new local and affordable housing option,” said Minister Saran.  “We’re proud to be a partner in this initiative, which clearly demonstrates our government’s commitment to increasing the supply of quality, affordable housing for seniors across the province.”

The Manitoba government has offered a range of support to the project including:

  • a $900,0000 loan guarantee,
  • more than $94,000 in annual funding in support of 16 on-site affordable and social housing units,
  • an estimated construction tax credit of more than $560,000 upon project completion, and
  • guidance related to establishing a co-operative housing project.

In total, Dugald Estates has 47 units.  The project was developed and will be managed by the Springfield Seniors Non-Profit Housing Co-op Ltd. (SSHC), a community-led co-operative organization.

“Not only has Dugald Estates enabled us to retain our seniors here where they want to continue living, it has freed up homes for young families to move into and grow our community,” said Lesley Thomson, chair, SSHC.  “Our co-op is a model for other Manitoba towns and villages and would not have been possible without our dedicated volunteers and the strong support of our municipal and provincial governments, the corporate community and our surrounding community.”

Suites at Dugald Estates range from 601 to 1,482 sq. ft. and the building features heated underground parking, a multi-purpose community room and amenity space.  All units have ensuite laundry and balcony or patio space.

Additional funding and in-kind contributions were provided by the RM of Springfield and the Dugald United Church.

Minister Saran noted the affordable housing units at Dugald Estates are part of the Manitoba government’s fulfilled five-year commitment to create 1,500 affordable housing units.  A three-year plan to create another 500 affordable and 500 social housing units is now underway, helping ensure the housing needs of more Manitobans are met.
