Building a Resilient Manitoba for 2020 and Beyond

Association of Manitoba Municipalities, Manitoba Government Co-Host Conference on the Future of Emergency Management

The Association of Manitoba Municipalities (AMM) and the Manitoba government will co-host a one-day conference tomorrow focused on creating a vision for a resilient future for Manitoba, Infrastructure and Transportation Minister Steve Ashton and Chris Goertzen, president, AMM, announced today.

“This one-day session will bring together experts, practitioners and community leaders as we find solutions to future challenges for building a more resilient Manitoba,” said Minister Ashton.  “The future of emergency management will be discussed with experts, practitioners and community leaders as they examine theories and current practices as they apply to our changing environment and world.  This will help guide us as we respond to increasingly severe weather events and continuing climate change. ”

“Manitoba municipalities are experiencing more frequent and severe weather events, while at the same time, changing demographics are impacting how communities are able to respond to these emergencies,” said Goertzen.  “It is important and timely to look at how we can ensure communities are best prepared for these situations into the future.”

The session will devote an equal amount of time to two main topics:

  • coping with emergency management under a future climate, and
  • changing demographics and the impact on emergency management.

The one day conference takes place at the Portage la Prairie Canad Inns.  More information is available at www.gov.mb.ca/emoor www.amm.mb.ca.
