Province Observes Day of Mourning for Workers Killed and Injured on the Job

Day Observed Around the World

Manitoba Labour and Immigration advises, April 28 has been designated the Day of Mourning across Canada, a time when workers, families, employers and others come together to remember those who have lost their lives to work-related injuries or occupational disease.

On the Day of Mourning, Manitobans pause to remember and honour the men and women who have lost their lives or suffered injury or illness on the job, and renew a commitment to ensure families and communities are not affected by a workplace tragedy.

Last year, nine workers died on the job in Manitoba and 15 occupational disease-related fatalities were accepted by the Workers Compensation Board.  Many more Manitobans were injured severely enough that they were off work for a number of days.

There are several ceremonies taking place across Manitoba to commemorate this day including the annual Day of Mourning Leaders’ Walk to the Legislative Building held by Safe Workers of Tomorrow. Today, flags at all government buildings are lowered to half-mast, from sunrise to sunset.
