Local Events Recognize Unique Culture, Heritage and Achievements of Canada's First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples: Clarke

The Manitoba government is encouraging Manitobans to take in National Aboriginal Day festivities throughout the province to honour the culture, heritage and achievements of Canada’s First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples, Indigenous and Municipal Relations Minister Eileen Clarke said today.

“Aboriginal Day is a great opportunity for Manitobans to share in the rich history and culture of Indigenous peoples,” Clarke said.  “By celebrating these unique contributions, we come together in the spirit of reconciliation and goodwill that will move us forward together as a province.”

The Manitoba government, today also became a partner of the Thompson Aboriginal Accord.  Created in 2009, the accord is a living document that recognizes the role of Aboriginal people in Thompson’s history and affirms the commitment of signatories to strengthened relationships with Aboriginal governments and peoples.

“Becoming a partner in the Thompson Aboriginal Accord is an important piece of our government’s commitment to enhancing economic opportunity throughout Manitoba’s north as part of the
Yes! North initiative,” said Kelly Bindle, MLA for Thompson, at an event in Thompson today on behalf of Growth, Enterprise and Trade Minister Cliff Cullen.  “Manitoba’s new government is committed to working positively with Indigenous people and communities to build respectful and effective partnerships that will ensure a bright, inclusive future for us all.”

As in years past, APTN will be hosting the largest celebration at The Forks on June 25 from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.  In addition to a powwow, concert and fireworks, there will be artisans and food vendors, music and dance performances, storytelling, traditional demonstrations, live art installations and children’s activities.

The minister noted this year marks the 20th anniversary of National Aboriginal Day, which is observed every year on June 21.

“First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples helped to build this province and are an integral part of our cultural makeup,” said Clarke.
