New Assisted Living Complex Opens for Seniors in Macgregor and Surrounding Region

A new, 16-unit assisted living housing complex for seniors officially opened its doors to seniors who wish to stay close to their families, community and other supports in MacGregor. Minister Jean-Yves Duclos, Families, Children and Social Development, and minister responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, and Manitoba Indigenous and Municipal Relations Minister Eileen Clarke made the announcement today.

“We are committed to investments that will make a real difference in our communities – investments that that will give Canadians access to affordable housing that meets their needs,” said Duclos. “These investments in MacGregor will provide seniors with housing that is safe and affordable, close to the support services that their community has to offer. They will also help generate new jobs and lay a solid foundation for the sustainable economy of the future. Congratulations to everyone involved Victoria Place and welcome home to the new residents.”

The $5.3-million project, Victoria Place, received $960,000 under the federal-provincial Investment in Affordable Housing agreement. This two-storey, 19,000-square-foot complex, is located at 66 Victoria St. and will serve low-to-moderate income seniors from MacGregor and surrounding communities. The building includes 12 one-bedroom units and four two-bedroom units, and it is fully accessible for residents with mobility issues. Up to four units have rents geared to income.

“This building is the first of its kind for MacGregor and a shining example of what a community can achieve with a vision and dedication,” said Clarke, who attended the grand opening on behalf of Manitoba Families Minister Scott Fielding. “We know that seniors live healthier and more active lives when surrounded by family and friends in a familiar neighbourhood. We are proud to help welcome the first tenants of Victoria Place and to be part of this special milestone.”

Nor-Mac Community Assisted Living (NMCALI) will manage the property. This group incorporated in 2010 to build the first assisted living project in the community.

“This is another great milestone for the whole community to celebrate,” said Dan Sawatzky, board chair, NMCALI. “Our donors, volunteers and all the stakeholders have worked very hard over the past five years to turn this project into a reality and it’s really gratifying to be operational and open. We’re looking forward to having Victoria Place benefit our community for many years to come.”
