Black History Month Exhibit Visits Manitoba Legislative Building

The Province of Manitoba welcomes and encourages everyone to visit a special exhibit at the Legislative Building as part of Black History Month, Sport, Culture and Heritage Minister Cathy Cox announced today.
“We celebrate the diversity and the history that makes Manitoba such a great place to live, work and play,” Cox said. “I encourage all Manitobans to take a moment to reflect, or take part in one of the many events marking this special month including On the Road North: Black Canada and the Journey to Freedom exhibit at the Legislative Building.”
On the Road North: Black Canada and the Journey to Freedom is a 10-panel display that highlights the heroes, honoured places and momentous events in Canada that helped to end slavery. The exhibit will be on display from Feb. 22 to 28 on the main floor of the Legislative Building, near the Grand Staircase. There is no cost to visit the display.
“The Government of Canada is proud to celebrate Black History Month and officially recognize the International Decade for People of African Descent,” said Canadian Heritage Minister Mélanie Joly, minister responsible for multiculturalism. “This year we are paying special tribute to black Canadian women. I encourage everyone to learn more about the exceptional women, both past and present, who have shaped our communities and our country.”
The exhibit tells the stories of successful migrations to Canada by enslaved African Americans. With tales of idealism, courage and leadership of black Canadians in the 18th century, the exhibit also acknowledges modern leaders and role models such as former governor general Michaëlle Jean.
Suitable for children aged 10 and up, the exhibit was produced by the Government of Canada and is hosted by the Province of Manitoba. It is also featured on the Teachers’ Centre at the Virtual Museum of Canada as a classroom teaching aid and online learning resource.
