Highway Motorists Reminded to Drive to Conditions and Remain Alert for Snowplows
With forecasts for potential heavy snow across areas of the province, motorists are reminded to adjust driving habits for winter road conditions and to remain alert when following or approaching oncoming highway snowplows, Infrastructure Minister Ron Schuler announced today.
“Driving to road conditions is in everyone’s best interests,” said Schuler. “We remind all motorists to check the weather forecast and driving conditions before travelling, be careful around snow clearing equipment and to slow down.”
The department monitors weather forecasts and plans operations with its fleet of almost 400 truck plows, de-icing equipment and motor graders. All equipment has flashing blue warning lights and drivers should stay well back of all equipment. Manitobans should not attempt to pass a snowplow from behind any time it is in operation and slow down when passing approaching snowplows.
The priority is to clear driving lanes first, then shoulders, removing snow from bridges and snow adjacent to guard rails and from other built up locations. Sanding, salting and de-icing activities continue as required.
