Government Appoints Board of Directors to Efficiency Manitoba to Help Lead New Organization

Manitoba Crown Services Minister Cliff Cullen today announced the board of directors for the new Efficiency Manitoba, the next step in creating smarter and more effective energy conservation programming for Manitobans.

“This follows through on a commitment that Manitobans voted for the last provincial election and I am pleased to announce these appointments in these key roles with Efficiency Manitoba,” said Cullen.  “Manitobans know that having the same Crown corporation selling power and encouraging power conservation doesn’t make sense, and we are proud to take this next step in bringing Efficiency Manitoba online.

“This new entity will be smaller, less expensive and more effective.”

New board members are Jeannette Montufar (chair), Somia Sadiq, George Orle, Kelly de Groot, Ray Redfern, Jack Wilson, Brian Purdy, and Edna Nabess, with Grant Doak appointed as interim chief executive officer of Efficiency Manitoba.

Work has progressed over the past few months under a cross-government/Crown transition team.  A comprehensive program inventory and performance analysis has been completed and is being reviewed by Phillipe Dunsky, an expert external consultant.  Administrative services arrangements are being developed with Manitoba Hydro to facilitate the transition of staff and programs, the minister said, adding organization design options have been developed for a new board’s consideration.

Regulations are under development to guide the work of Efficiency Manitoba.  Rebranding work is underway to transition to Efficiency Manitoba from Power Smart.  Information technology and website assessment and transition work has started, as well as preliminary work on finding office space for the corporation.

The mission of Efficiency Manitoba is to reduce power costs Manitobans pay and to deliver improved energy saving programs, in a cost-effective manner.  Efficiency Manitoba’s goals include meeting ambitious energy savings targets, achieving reductions in greenhouse-gas emissions, and reducing consumption of electricity and natural gas in environmentally sound and cost-effective ways.
