Manitoba Offers British Columbia Assistance in Flood Fight

The Manitoba government stands willing to provide any required flood-fighting equipment to help the Province of British Columbia fight record high flood waters in the Interior region, Infrastructure Minister Ron Schuler, minister responsible for emergency measures, announced today.

“The people of British Columbia have been there for us in the past, helping with natural disasters and public emergencies,” Schuler said.  “The people of Manitoba know just how devastating floods can be, and we will be working with our counterparts to ensure any and all equipment needed will be put to good use.”

The Manitoba Emergency Measures Organization (EMO) will co-ordinate the movement of flood barriers, equipment, staff and trained experts should they be required.  EMO is responsible for overseeing and co-ordinating all aspects of emergency preparedness in Manitoba, and has a multitude of experience with flooding and natural disaster recovery.

“We have considerable experience with floods and flood-water management and are pleased to be able to offer any assistance our B.C. counterparts may need,” said Schuler.  “Manitoba is fortunate to have mostly flood-free spring.”

It is expected the nature and scope of Manitoba’s assistance will be finalized in the coming days, with deployment to occur as soon as possible, the minister added.
