Manitoba Announces Expert Advisory Council for Climate and Green Plan

Government Moving Ahead with Made-in-Manitoba Climate and Green Plan

The Manitoba government has named the panel of experts who will advise government on implementing the Made-in-Manitoba Climate and Green Plan, Sustainable Development Minister Rochelle Squires announced today.

“I am pleased to introduce these highly qualified members of the Expert Advisory Council,” said Squires.  “Our goal is to become the cleanest, greenest and most climate-resilient province in all of Canada.  This council will help us achieve that goal.”

The expert advisors come from diverse backgrounds and bring a wide variety of expertise to the table, covering both the environment and the economy, the minister said.  That expertise includes conservation, water management, recycling, biodiversity, climate change, resource development and local government.

The Expert Advisory Council’s roles and responsibilities will include:

  • providing advice and recommendations to the minister of sustainable development on programs, policies and measures to be included in the climate and green plan;
  • providing advice and recommendations to the minister of sustainable development on greenhouse-gas emissions reduction goals;
  • advising on a carbon savings account based on five-year greenhouse-gas emissions reduction goals; and
  • water issues previously undertaken by the Manitoba Water Council.

The Expert Advisory Council will comprise the following members:

  • Colleen Sklar, Lockport – chair;
  • Andrew MacSkimming, Winnipeg – vice-chair;
  • Dennis Anderson, Gimli;   
  • Jim Irwin, Lake Audy;
  • Ian Gillies, Winnipeg;
  • Karla Guyn, Lockport;
  • Dimple Roy, Winnipeg; and
  • Laurie Streich, Winnipeg.

David McLaughlin will serve as technical advisor to the Expert Advisory Council.

“We are moving ahead with implementing our Made-in-Manitoba Climate and Green Plan,” Squires said.  “Manitobans want to see meaningful action that gets results.  This dedicated group will help guide the way.”
