Province Updating Board Membership for Manitoba Securities Commission, Tax Appeals Commission
The Manitoba government is appointing two new members to the Manitoba Securities Commission, as well as appointing one new member and reclassifying one other member to the Tax Appeals Commission, Finance Minister Scott Fielding announced today.
“These commissions ensure oversight of key financial matters, including securities, commodity futures and tax appeals, as well as the work of real estate brokers and mortgage brokers,” said Fielding. “I want to thank all previous members for their work and look forward to the participation of the new appointees in the months ahead.”
The Manitoba Securities Commission is responsible for administering The Securities Act, The Real Estate Brokers Act, The Mortgage Brokers Act and The Commodity Futures Act. Commission members create policy, review applications seeking exceptions, or other special relief and conduct disciplinary hearings.
New members include:
- Charlie Burns (Winnipeg) – former president, chief executive officer and founder of PPI Solutions Inc., a leading insurance marketer. He previously served as president of Burns Financial Group Inc. and was chair of the Misericordia Health Centre Foundation from 2010 to 2014.
- David Huberdeau-Reid (Brandon) – associate accountant at Sensus Partnership of Chartered Professional Accountants. He holds a bachelor of business administration from Brandon University and is currently undertaking a masters of professional accounting program. His volunteer experience includes the Knights of Columbus, Westman Immigration Services and the Vanguard Credit Union Board of Directors.
The Tax Appeals Commission rules on appeals filed by taxpayers who disagree with assessments issued by Manitoba’s taxation officials, and provide Manitoba’s taxpayers with a fair and independent appeals process for assessments issued under tax statutes.
Dale Ammeter (Winnipeg), a tax and commercial lawyer with the Ammeter Law Group, is being reclassified as the chief commissioner.
Frank Lavitt (Winnipeg), head of the tax department at Taylor McCaffrey LLP, is being appointed for a three-year term. He has taught taxation law for the Law Society of Manitoba, the University of Manitoba Law School and elsewhere since 1980. His volunteer experience includes serving on the Appeals Committee of Chartered Professional Accountants Manitoba, Mount Carmel Clinic Foundation Inc. and Meals on Wheels of Winnipeg.
