Government Applauds Work of Manitoba Hydro in Partnering to Further Reduce Carbon Emissions

The Manitoba government applauds the work of Manitoba Hydro as it moves toward finalizing a sale of up to 215 megawatts of hydroelectricity to SaskPower, Crown Services Minister Colleen Mayer announced today.

“Manitoba is Canada’s greenest province,” said Mayer.  “Manitoba Hydro’s supply of clean, green hydroelectric power helps reduce carbon emissions in neighboring jurisdictions, presenting tremendous opportunities.  We congratulate Manitoba Hydro and SaskPower for their work and look forward to a finalized agreement increasing the flow of energy between the provinces.”

Manitoba Hydro and SaskPower have signed a significant term sheet for a minimum of 18 years, with the possibility of extension for up to a total of 30 years, the minister said.  It represents an increase of up to 215 megawatts of hydroelectricity exports beginning in 2022.  These exports would help displace fossil-fuel power generation and could lead to emission reductions of approximately 1.3 megatonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent per year, the minister added.

The minister noted the province continues to work to engage the federal government to support further east-west transmission possibilities, as Manitoba’s production of clean hydroelectricity can be an even greater part of the Canadian solution to lower emissions and decrease the nation’s carbon footprint.
