Province Names Board Member to Red River Basin Commission

Manitoba Sustainable Development advises it has named Melvin (Mel) Klassen to the Red River Basin Commission board of directors.

The Red River Basin Commission is a charitable, not-for-profit organization that works to create and implement a comprehensive, integrated basin-wide vision, builds consensus on issues of watershed management, and speaks with a unified voice for the Red River Basin.  The Manitoba government provides an annual grant of $100,000 to support its efforts, and as the farthest downstream jurisdiction in the watershed, Manitoba benefits greatly from work done to address flooding, drought, watershed management and water quality protection.

Now retired, Klassen previously served as the mayor of Altona for 16 years, plus four years as councillor.  He is a former principal and school teacher in the Altona area for 30 years.  He has also served on many professional associations including the Association of Manitoba Municipalities (two years as vice-president), Altona Credit Union Board (16 years as president) and the Manitoba Association of Principals.  He is also an active community volunteer and some of his many accomplishments include the establishment of Gallery in the Park, Gardens on the Tenth, Access Field of Dreams and Skatepark.

The commission’s board of directors has members from Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and Manitoba including senior officials from the departments of Sustainable Development, Agriculture and Infrastructure.
