Province Issues High Water Advisory

– – –
Precipitation in September Well Above Normal

Manitoba Infrastructure’s Hydrologic Forecast Centre has issued a high water advisory for the Whiteshell Lakes area because of recent heavy rains across Manitoba and northwest Ontario.  Cottagers and boaters should take caution on and around the lakes.

Precipitation in September tracked well above normal in southern Manitoba and in the United States portions of the Red and Souris river basins.  Some areas in southern Manitoba and the Red River basin in the U.S. received record high precipitation for September.

Levels and flows are rising on most rivers and creeks in these basins, but water levels will remain within banks.  Levels and flows are well above normal for this time of the year at most locations in southern Manitoba including the Red River and tributaries, and southeast Manitoba including the Whiteshell Lakes area.

The Red River at James Avenue in Winnipeg is forecast to reach 13.5 to 14 feet between Oct. 3 and 4.
