Province Launches Manitoba Works Plan
– – –Creating 40,000 New Private-sector Jobs: Pallister
The Manitoba government kicked off its Manitoba Works plan at an event today with its partners and stakeholders to identify specific actions that can be taken in the next 12 months to spur economic growth in Manitoba, Premier Brian Pallister announced today.
“We are focused on working with our partners in the private sector to create 40,000 new
private-sector job opportunities over the next four years,” said Pallister. “Last year, Manitoba led the country in private-sector investment growth and we’re going to build on this momentum by opening up new markets, creating more opportunities and expanding economic prosperity in our province.”
The Manitoba Works plan focuses on targeted actions to help create the right conditions to support private-sector job creation and overall growth in Manitoba’s economy. Team Manitoba, consisting of the new Economic Development Office and the province’s strategic and regional partners, will work together to advance key Manitoba Works priorities including:
- improving the investment environment for existing Manitoba companies to expand;
- attracting new investment to the province;
- accelerating talent acquisition and business expansion by fast-tracking the development of Manitoba’s skills, talent and knowledge strategy; and
- expanding export markets with a targeted new trade strategy.
The premier noted the province will build on the success it has already achieved in creating a better environment for economic growth and job creation, which includes lowering the PST to seven per cent from eight per cent, moving toward balanced budgets through responsible deficit reduction and reducing the total number of regulatory requirements across government by almost 80,000 since 2016.
“Growing our economy is a long-term expedition made up of many individual steps,” said Pallister. “We look forward to working together with all Manitobans to identify the steps we can achieve in the next year to further advance initiatives to expand markets and reduce job-killing red tape.”
An online survey, designed to supplement the input gathered, was launched at today’s event. The province will also be hosting online town hall events to provide further discussion with Manitobans on specific priorities under the Manitoba Works plan. The Manitoba Works plan supports the recently announced Economic Growth Action Plan, which identifies priority areas including the development of targeted sector strategies as a way to foster competitiveness, facilitate growth, identify investment opportunities and address economic barriers in the province.
