Province Advises Floodway May Be Activated Wednesday Evening

Manitoba Infrastructure’s Hydrologic Forecast Centre reports the Red River Floodway may be activated as early as Wednesday evening.

The centre is monitoring a system forecast to bring substantial precipitation to the Winnipeg area starting on Thursday continuing into the weekend.

With forecast temperatures hovering near 0 C, the precipitation may fall as rain and snow.

Heavy rains across the Red River Basin in September have resulted in river levels at record highs for this time of year.  As river levels continue to increase, the province may operate the Red River Floodway under Rule 4 beginning Wednesday evening to lower levels within the city of Winnipeg in advance of this significant precipitation.

Operation is dependent on conditions, which are continually monitored.
