One of 20 New Schools to be Built over Next 10 Years: Goertzen

NIVERVILLE—A new high school was opened in Niverville today, one of 20 new schools planned across the province, with assistance of nearly $22 million from the Manitoba government, Education Minister Kelvin Goertzen announced here today.

“This new Niverville High School, serving grades 9 to 12, is a significant achievement for both the Manitoba government and the Hanover School Division,” said Goertzen.  “Along with Pine Ridge Elementary School in Winkler, these are the first two schools out of 20 that our government will build over the next 10 years, adding capacity for almost 11,000 additional students.”

The 66,700-sq.-ft. Niverville facility will accommodate 450 grades 9 to 12 students and includes a 74-seat child-care centre.  The school has been designed to accommodate a future addition, increasing the future capacity of the school to 550 students, the minister noted.

The school features 10 general classrooms, two science rooms, two science labs, a computer room, an art room, a grooming room and a life skills suite for students needing additional supports, a multi-purpose room, a band room, a library, a large gymnasium and fitness room, and resource teaching and educational support spaces.

The child-care centre is in the final stage of construction and is expected to open in January 2020, Goertzen said.  This centre will accommodate 54 preschool children and 20 infants.

The building meets the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver rating requirements and Manitoba Hydro energy use targets.  This includes focusing on enhanced indoor air quality, greater energy efficiency and overall building durability.

“The new Niverville High School will ensure that these students are educated in quality facilities that can support excellence in education, far removed from the over-crowded portables and schools the students of Niverville and other communities have had to endure for so many years,” added the minister.
