Former Saskatchewan Premier to Lead Manitoba Hydro Review

Former Saskatchewan premier Brad Wall will serve as the new commissioner of the Manitoba Hydro review, Crown Services Minister Jeff Wharton announced today.

“Mr. Wall has been appointed as a commissioner to continue and complete the review undertaken into the planning and decision-making processes on the Keeyask Generation Project and the Bipole III Transmission and Converter Station Project,” Wharton said.  “This review will look into timing issues, prior government directions, planning, approval and oversight issues, and the large-scale cost and financial implications these projects have for Manitoba Hydro and Manitoba ratepayers.”

Following his review, Wall will provide the government of Manitoba with a report and his recommendations.

“This important work will assist our government in avoiding the mistakes we inherited and will strengthen Manitoba Hydro’s planning, decision-making and management processes, ultimately saving money,” said Wharton.  “It will also greatly assist us in delivering on our own government’s commitment to ensure that all public assets are responsibly conceived and developed – and that all public funds are effectively managed – for the benefit of all Manitobans.”

The commissioner’s review is anticipated to be completed by Oct. 31, 2020, the minister noted.

Wall served as the premier of Saskatchewan from 2007 to 2018.  He now serves as a special advisor in the national law firm Osler, Hoskin and Harcourt LLP.
