Province Appoints Interim Board for New Southern Manitoba Economic Development Organization

BRANDON—The Manitoba government has named the board appointments that will be charged with establishing a new economic development office based in Brandon, Economic Development and Training Minister Ralph Eichler announced here today.

“This board will now work to establish a new rural economic development office, which will act as a hub for collaboration with economic development agencies in Brandon and throughout southern Manitoba,” said Eichler.  “Our Manitoba Works Plan has established a target of 40,000 new private-sector jobs in the province and a key part of that plan is attracting new investment in southern Manitoba.”

The new office is based on input from both the Association of Manitoba Municipalities (AMM) and the Manitoba Chambers of Commerce, who led a consultation process with economic development organizations and regional partners.

The interim board will set up the new organization and ensure the office’s mandate aligns with the work of existing economic development agencies, local governments and chambers of commerce.  The interim board will be co-chaired by Chuck Davidson, president and CEO of the Manitoba Chamber of Commerce, and Joe Masi, executive director of AMM.

The members appointed to the interim board of directors are:
•    Chuck Davidson (co-chair);
•    Joe Masi (co-chair);
•    Darrell Brown;
•    Louis Allain;
•    Marilyn Crewe;
•    Kerry Swanson;
•    Jeff Hood;
•    Gail Halko; and
•    Charlotte Unrau.

The rural economic development organization supports Manitoba’s Economic Growth Action Plan.  It identifies priority areas, including the development of targeted sector strategies, as a way to foster competitiveness, facilitate growth, identify investment opportunities and address economic barriers in the province.
