Province Invests in Key Infrastructure Projects in RM of Yellowhead

SHOAL LAKE—The Manitoba government confirmed its contribution to three key infrastructure projects in the Rural Municipality of Yellowhead, Central Services Minister Reg Helwer announced here today.

“Important projects such as these improve and support communities, as well as economic growth in Manitoba, by investing in infrastructure to stimulate the economy and contribute to a higher quality of life for generations to come,” said Helwer.  “The Manitoba government has a successful partnership with Canada and local municipalities to support investments in infrastructure across the province.”

The minister joined local officials and community members in Shoal Lake today to celebrate the completion of three projects: upgrades to Shoal Lake’s water treatment plant, rehabilitation of the Shoal Lake Regional Airport runway and additional dressing rooms at the Shoal Lake Communiplex. The governments of Canada and Manitoba each contributed to these projects through the Small Communities Fund and Clean Water Waste Water Fund.

“We’re proud to work closely with our partners to invest in modern municipal infrastructure to improve people’s lives, strengthen local economies, and keep communities healthy,” said Catherine McKenna, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities. “These upgrades to the Rural Municipality of Yellowhead’s airport facilities, water treatment plant and communiplex will enhance recreational activities, ensure residents enjoy a high quality of drinking water and keep a crucial mode of transportation in the region safe.”

The Shoal Lake Regional Airport received excavation, renovation and pavement work to fix major cracks and extend the runway life to benefit the active flying community and flight school.

Construction of a new water treatment plant ensures residents have access to modern, reliable water and wastewater services that meet the Guidelines for Canadian Drinking Water Quality.

Communiplex upgrades include two additional dressing rooms fully equipped with a plumbing and heating system.  Features include showers, an equipment room, 21 stalls and a mechanical room with washer and dryer.

“The airport runway rehabilitation will extend the life of the runway and provide not only the community, but western Manitoba, a safe landing area that pilots will appreciate for many years to come,” said Mayor Mervin Starzyk, Rural Municipality of Yellowhead.  “The addition of dressing rooms to the Shoal Lake Communiplex have resulted in the ability to accommodate more teams in a comfortable modern setting.  Likewise, the state-of-the-art water plant has provided our community with a much-improved, safe water supply."

The Manitoba government contributed more than $1.2 million, while the Government of Canada provided more than $2.2 million and the Rural Municipality of Yellowhead provided $4.8 million.
