Province Congratulates Student Winners of Fire Prevention Week Contest

The Manitoba government congratulates the winners of the 2019 Fire Prevention Week Fire Escape plan contest, Municipal Relations Minister Rochelle Squires, minister responsible for the Office of the Fire Commissioner, announced today.

“Early education about fire prevention is vitally important because we know it provides an opportunity for students to start a conversation with their parents about fire safety,” Squires said.  “Once that conversation begins, it can become a fun family activity to prepare an escape plan and then to practice it.  That simple action can save lives and that is the greatest prize anyone could offer.”

Manitoba students were asked to complete a Fire Escape Plan with their family and submit a contest entry form to the Office of the Fire Commissioner (OFC) for a chance to win a $200 Lego gift card.  One student was randomly selected from each elementary grade level from kindergarten to Grade 4, right across the province.

Staff from the OFC, along with local fire departments and a representative of contest sponsor Portage Mutual Insurance, have started to make presentations and already visited schools in Boissevain, Morden and Roblin.  Today a prize was presented to a Grade 2 student at Garden Grove School in Winnipeg.

While only one student from each grade wins the Lego gift card, the winner’s classmates receive a collection of fun fire prevention materials and their teacher receives a bag of fire prevention educational material for use in class.
