Manitoba Recognizes Police and Peace Officers' National Memorial Day with a Virtual Event

Manitobans are encouraged to honour the dedication and sacrifices of police and peace officers across our country by participating in a virtual celebration this year, Justice Minister Cliff Cullen announced today.

“Today we join together with Canadians across our country to recognize the commitment of our police and peace officers. We honour those who dedicated and lost their lives working to making our province and country a safer place,” said Cullen.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the annual public ceremony on the south grounds of the Legislative Building is being replaced with a virtual event. The ceremony will be shared today and can be viewed at www.youtube.com/watch?v=EhHwC9P74LE&feature=youtu.be&ab_channel=MACPMemorial.

“It is important to remember the sacrifices made by our police and peace officers, both past and present,” said Cullen. “2020 has been a challenging year, and we thank those who serve for going above and beyond in response to this unprecedented health crisis.”

The virtual event in Manitoba coincides with the national event, also being held virtually in Ottawa on the same date.

In 1998, the Government of Canada proclaimed the last Sunday in September of every year as Police and Peace Officers’ National Memorial Day. This day gives Canadians an opportunity to formally express appreciation for the dedication of police and peace officers to keep our communities safe.
