Province Advises Employer Prosecuted for Workplace Incident

Manitoba Finance’s Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) reminds employers to ensure workplaces are safe and safeguards are in place for machines after an employer was prosecuted for violations of the Workplace Safety and Health Act.

On April 26, 2018, a Carberry-based Shilo Farms Ltd. worker was preparing seed potatoes. Potatoes travel along conveyors to a seed-treating drum and while inspecting the seed-treating drum, the worker’s left hand made contact with the conveyor’s exposed chain and sprockets. The worker suffered serious hand injuries as a result.

After a thorough investigation by WSH officials, the employer was fined $28,675 and an additional $2,000 to be used for educating the public on occupational safety and health. Shilo Farms Ltd. is an agricultural company engaged primarily in farming potatoes. At the time of the incident, Shilo Farms Ltd. employed approximately 40 workers.

The province publishes information on stop work orders, administrative penalties and convictions to inform and educate employers and workers of their legal responsibilities under the Workplace Safety and Health Act to encourage safe work practices.
