Province Advises Employer Prosecuted for Workplace Incident

The Manitoba government is reminding employers to ensure that workplaces are safe and workers are adequately trained to perform their duties after an employer was prosecuted for violations of the Workplace Safety and Health Act and its associated regulations.

On Dec. 5, 2017, a worker from Altona-based Friesens Corporation was making adjustments to a Hobbs corner cutting machine, which is used to cut laminated boards. The worker’s hand came into contact with the cutting blade resulting in serious injuries. After a thorough investigation by Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) officials, the employer was fined $32,500.

WSH officials work in collaboration with Manitoba Justice. Following a detailed WSH investigation, Manitoba Justice officials may authorize charges under the Workplace Safety and Health Act.  The province may publish information about WSH enforcement in order to educate employers and workers about Manitoba’s occupational safety and health laws and encourage safe work practices. More information can be found at www.gov.mb.ca/labour/safety/compliance.html.
