Grant Program Protects Manitobans with Activities to Stay Safe at Home: Cox

More than 50 new projects have been approved through the Safe at Home Manitoba grant, a new program which will allow Manitobans to enjoy creative cultural, artistic, and fitness activities in the safety of their own homes this holiday season, Sport, Culture and Heritage Minister Cathy Cox announced today.

“We recognize that this holiday season is going to look a lot different for most of us, and above all, the health and safety of Manitobans remains our first priority,” said Cox. “The best way for Manitobans to protect themselves right now is by staying at home as much as possible. The Safe at Home Manitoba program will make it easier for families to still enjoy a number of activities this holiday season, but in the safety of their own home.”

Approved recipients this week include:
Hindsight’s 2020 Music + Talk + Comedy New Year’s Eve live webcast;
Canadian National Institute for the Blind – virtual yoga classes for the blind and partially sighted;
Winnipeg Singers – From Our Homes to Yours virtual concert;
Ikwe Widdjiitiwin Inc. – virtual activities to support families in shelter when home is no longer safe;
McNally Robinson Community Classroom – a three-month program that includes a small book club and community online classes;
Cormorant Community Council – providing sleds for outdoor activities through its Slide My Way Through COVID-19 program; and
Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre – providing complimentary tickets to All is Bright, which brims with storytelling and song as the holidays are celebrated.

“I’m so thrilled to bring Manitobans All is Bright, our holiday offering and my first foray into theatre on film. It was a joy to film throughout our John Hirsch mainstage and feature the incredible talent of our community,” said Kelly Thornton, artistic director, Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre. “Sharing our celebration of the holiday season with all Manitobans would not have been possible without the generous support of the province of Manitoba and the Safe at Home program.”

The annual Legislative Building open house is also moving online this year so that Manitobans can continue to celebrate the holiday season with their elected officials. The open house launches tomorrow at 6 p.m. and will feature a concert with a talented assortment of artists highlighting the very best of Manitoba. The virtual open house will feature performances by The Royal Winnipeg Ballet, William Prince, The Lytics, Sweet Alibi, JP Hoe, Al Simmons, Rayannah and Duncan Mercredi.

The Safe at Home Manitoba grant provides $3 million to a wide variety of Manitoba organizations and individuals who are able to produce free programming such as live streaming of the performing arts, cooking at home classes, at-home fitness programs and home-based art programs for children.
