Continued Commitment of Funding Supports for Municipalities: Johnson

The Manitoba government has launched a new Municipal Service Delivery Improvement Program that will assist municipalities and planning districts to improve services and find efficiencies, Municipal Relations Minister Derek Johnson announced today.

“In addition to providing COVID-19 recovery supports to municipalities, we have held steady to our Budget 2020 commitment to maintain municipal operating funding levels,” said Johnson. “It’s important that local governments deliver programs and services to Manitobans in an effective and efficient manner. This new initiative will assist municipalities and planning districts to undertake value-for-money reviews and identify areas where improvements can be made. Identified savings can then be reinvested back into their communities to enhance services without raising taxes.”

The Municipal Service Delivery Improvement Program is a voluntary program that will allow municipalities and planning districts to conduct service delivery reviews to identify opportunities for savings. Service delivery programs in the areas of transportation, protection, water and sewer, recreation and culture, planning and general government administration can be reviewed.

Potential savings found will stay with municipalities and can be reallocated to their community’s priorities.

The province has committed up to $5 million over the next four years to support the Municipal Service Delivery Improvement Program and funding will not be reduced based on implemented savings by municipalities from this program.
