Province Announces Application Intake for Quarry Rehab Program

The Manitoba government has launched an application intake for the Quarry Rehabilitation on Private Land and Municipal Land Program to help support the rehabilitation of depleted quarries and pits on private and municipal land, Agriculture and Resource Minister Blaine Pedersen announced today.

“The objective of this program is to ensure that depleted pits and quarries are rehabilitated to a condition that is safe and environmentally stable,” said Pedersen. “This program is helping grow our economy and putting Manitobans back to work.”

A total of $5.8 million is available to be allocated toward municipalities and private landowners for the rehabilitation of quarries and pits. Eligible, legal landowners can apply for up to $200,000 through the program.

“The Association of Manitoba Municipalities appreciates the intake for the 2021 Quarry Rehab Program is earlier this year,” said Kam Blight, president, AMM. “We are also pleased municipalities are eligible to apply for this funding to enhance the sustainability of their communities.”

Eligible project activities under the program include:
• sloping and grading,
• movement of oversize boulders and other materials,
• spreading of overburden and topsoil, and
• seeding of graded areas.

“We are happy to see the program roll out this year in a timely fashion,” said Chris Lorenc, president, Manitoba Heavy Construction Association. “There are numerous projects for rehabilitating spent private pits and quarries awaiting the application process, and the communities where these projects sit will be happy, as well, to hear the process is moving forward.”

The program will be evaluated based on transparent criteria and a competitive cost per cubic metre evaluation to ensure that projects are prioritized based on measured outcomes and value for investment.
