$8-Million Investment in 2021-22 Will Help More Employers Better Respond to COVID-19: Eichler

The Manitoba government has opened intake for the Canada–Manitoba Job Grant and increased investment to $8 million this year to help more employers with employee training, Economic Development and Jobs Minister Ralph Eichler announced today.

“Our government is investing more than $2 million in additional funds this year to meet the demand for Canada–Manitoba Job Grants and assist employers to better respond to the impacts of COVID-19,” said Eichler. “This investment will help more employers achieve their business goals including increased productivity, competitiveness and profitability.”

The province’s $8 million investment for 2021-22 is an increase of $2.3 million from 2020-21. The Canada-Manitoba Job Grant helps employers offset the costs of training new employees, or costs associated with developing the skills of their existing workers to meet the requirements of their present job, or to attain a promotion.

Eligible employers may apply for up to $10,000 per employee to assist with training costs delivered by a third party. Employers with 100 or fewer employees must contribute a minimum of 25 per cent of training costs, and employers with over 100 employees must contribute a minimum of 50 per cent of training costs. Employers can apply for up to a maximum of $100,000 in funding.

Eligible costs include:
• tuition fees;
• textbooks, software and other required materials;
• exam fees; and
• travel costs for the training of individuals in northern and remote communities.

Staff from the Department of Economic Development and Jobs is available to help companies complete grant applications, develop training plans to meet their business goals, and develop or improve their human resource plans.

Eichler noted the application process for 2021-22 has been streamlined to make it even easier for applicants to apply and shorten the grant approval time. The first intake period of 2021 opens Monday, May 3 and a second intake period will open in August. Eligible employers are invited to submit applications continually as training needs arise.
