MANITOBA LAUNCHES ANOTHER INTAKE FOR EFFICIENT TRUCKING PROGRAM

Transportation Sector Remains Vital to Reducing Greenhouse-Gas Emissions: Guillemard

The Manitoba government has launched another round of applications for grants to support the transportation sector with rebates for fuel-saving technology and retrofits for heavy-duty vehicles that will lead to a reduction in greenhouse-gas (GHG) emissions, Conservation and Climate Minister Sarah Guillemard announced today.

“We continue to work toward the goal of GHG reduction and the transportation sector is an important partner in that effort,” said Guillemard. “Our government is pleased to continue offering these incentives for the industry to save money and to reduce emissions.”

Manitoba’s Efficient Trucking Program provides rebates on retrofits involving fuel-saving and aerodynamic technologies for heavy-duty vehicles and trailers, resulting in GHG emission reductions. The funding comes from the Low Carbon Economy Leadership Fund, which invests in projects that reduce carbon pollution, save money and create good jobs. Equipment installations will have positive environmental impacts in Manitoba and Canada, saving up to 25.9 million litres of fuel over program life. Based on the lifecycle of technologies and products eligible under the program (typically seven to 10 years), the estimated cumulative GHG emission reductions will range between 175,000 and 244,000 tonnes by 2030.

The most recent round of applications ended March 31 and included 147 that were approved for a total Manitoba economic stimulus of $8.14 million, of which $3.6 million in rebates will be paid to the trucking industry ($1.8 million from each of the Manitoba and federal governments).

Owner-operator and corporate fleet applicants are eligible for rebates of up to 50 per cent on fuel-saving devices such as idling technologies, low-rolling resistant tires and trailer skirts. An applicant can request a rebate for multiple devices on a single vehicle and/or trailer, as well as for multiple devices on multiple vehicles and/or trailers owned or operated by the same applicant as part of a single application up to a maximum rebate of $20,000 per truck and trailer combination.

Applications are reviewed on a first come, first reviewed basis. The next three scheduled intakes will open on the following dates:
• June 1;
• Nov. 15; and
• Feb. 16, 2022 (depending on uptake and the amounts provided through the June and November intakes).

The Efficient Trucking Program will receive up to $5.9 million from the Government of Canada through the Low Carbon Economy Leadership Fund, while the Manitoba government is also contributing $5.9 million. The program is delivered through Manitoba’s Climate and Green Plan Implementation Office and administered by Red River College’s Vehicle Technology and Energy Centre.
