Literacy Award Recognizes Exceptional Adult Learners
To celebrate International Literacy Day, the 17th annual Council of the Federation (COF) Literacy Award was presented to Manitoba’s recipientby Advanced Education, Skills and Immigration Minister Wayne Ewasko.
“On behalf of all Manitobans, we extend our warmest congratulations to Fatima Malika Auktaeva on being selected as Manitoba's recipient of the 2021 COF Literacy Award,” said Ewasko. “This award was created in 2004 by the premiers of all provinces and territories to celebrate outstanding achievement, innovative practice and excellence as an adult literacy learner.”
In 2004, Canada’s premiers agreed to create an award to pay tribute to the individuals and organizations involved in the field of literacy across the country. Each year, 13 medallions and award certificates are handed out, one in each province and territory, to acknowledge achievement in literacy skills, innovative practice and exemplary programming.
“As a learner at Stevenson-Britannia Adult Learning Centre, who recently graduated with a mature student diploma, Fatima has made significant academic strides and worked hard to improve herreading, writing and numeracy skills,” said Ewasko. “Through her community work, she has become a positive role model and an inspiration to all learners and fellow Manitobans.”
Ewasko noted adult learning and literacy continues to be a priority for Manitoba and supports the government’s Skills, Talent and Knowledge Strategy vision, where Manitobans will have the right skills, talent and knowledge to succeed in their careers, enjoy a high-quality life, strengthen communities and grow our economy.
Canada’s 13 provincial and territorial premiers are members of the Council of the Federation.
