Northern Infrastructure Strengthens Provincial Economy: Lagimodiere

The Manitoba government has invested $5.1 million to improve infrastructure in several Northern Affairs communities, Indigenous Reconciliation and Northern Relations Minister Alan Lagimodiere announced today.

“This $5.1-million investment fosters positive and respectful relationships with Indigenous people and northern communities, and supports meaningful partnerships and reconciliation,” said Lagimodiere. “This work includes $1.2 million in new infrastructure projects that have been completed since March 2021 including water treatment plants, administrative buildings and waste disposal sites that significantly impact the well-being of Manitobans living in these communities.”

Since January 2021, 10 projects were completed, with the largest project being a $412,000 administrative building replacement in Barrows that allowed for the continuity of municipal programs and services. The building has been in operation since April 2021.

“The new Barrows Administration Building is a big, spacious, beautiful building that benefits the community residents as well as the Barrows mayor and council,” said Mayor Brenda Hather, Community of Barrows. “The building helps us run the day-to-day operations while providing critical programs and services to the surrounding smaller communities.”

“Investing in these projects empowers communities to advance sustainable economic growth, prosperity and a brighter future for the region,” said Lagimodiere. “Continuing to work with Northern Affairs communities and leaders ensures that Indigenous and non-Indigenous residents have access to infrastructure and can fully engage in Manitoba’s economic development.  By working together, communities are stronger, making a stronger Manitoba.”

Previously, the province announced $3.9 million in funding for 33 projects that included a $2.5-million waste disposal site in Waterhen, as well as additional roads and water treatment plants.
