Manitoba Recognizes Police and Peace Officers' National Memorial Day
Manitobans are encouraged to honour the hard work, dedication and sacrifices of police and peace officers by attending a memorial service for the fallen at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights on Sunday, Justice Minister Cameron Friesen announced today.
“We join together with Manitobans and Canadians across the country to recognize the commitment of our police and peace officers,” said Friesen. “We recognize and thank those who serve everyday and accept the risks to their safety, and we honour those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the performance of their duties. This year we salute the two officers who died in Ontario and Saskatchewan, and express our sympathies and our gratitude to their families.”
The annual public ceremony will return this year with an event hosted by the Manitoba Association of Chiefs of Police and will take place on Sunday, Sept. 26 at 11a.m. at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights.
“Today, more than ever, it’s important we recognize and reflect on those men and women who confronted the challenges of their time and gave their lives to keep peace and order in our communities,” said Chief Danny Smyth, president, MACP. “There will always be a need for police and peace officers and it is important that we pay tribute to those who came before us and their families to ensure their sacrifice never be forgotten.”
Scott Johnston, special envoy for military affairs, will be representing the Manitoba government at the service, which coincides with the national event being held in Ottawa on the same date.
In 1998, the Government of Canada proclaimed the last Sunday in September of every year as Police and Peace Officers’ National Memorial Day. This day gives Canadians an opportunity to formally express appreciation for the dedication of police and peace officers to keep communities safe.
