Using Science to Inform Fisheries Management: Eichler

The Manitoba government is releasing progress reports of the status of fish populations within the Lake Manitoba and Lake Winnipegosis fisheries, Agriculture and Resource Development Minister Ralph Eichler announced today.

“Manitoba has a responsibility to monitor and manage our fisheries keeping their long-term sustainability in mind,” said Eichler. “Fisheries data and stock assessments are critical tools used to both inform decision-making and ensure these valuable fisheries are managed sustainably for all users and for future generations to continue to enjoy.”

Lake Manitoba and Lake Winnipegosis are Manitoba’s second- and third-largest commercial fisheries, respectively. Commercial fishing generates approximately $100 million annually to the economy as well as valuable economic benefits to communities, such as employment opportunities, support for local businesses and provides a healthy food source to Manitobans and others through export markets.

Manitoba is committed to working with commercial fishers and will launch an engagement process this fall with Lake Manitoba and Lake Winnipegosis commercial fishers to review the stock assessment reports and to discuss future management plans for these valuable commercial fisheries.

“The sustainable management of our fisheries is based on the collection and analysis of fisheries data, and adapting management to be reflective of the status of fish populations,” added Eichler. “Manitoba continues to improve sustainability of commercial fisheries and advance efforts toward eco-certification to ensure Manitoba fish products maintain access to markets.”
