Standing Hearing for Inquest Into the Death Of Aaron Ross

A standing hearing will take place to determine who can participate in the upcoming inquest into the death of Aaron Ross, 27, of Winnipeg.

Ross died on Sept. 30, 2019, at St. Boniface Hospital several days after an encounter with members of the Winnipeg Police Service where he was detained and taken to St. Boniface Hospital.

Under the Fatality Inquiries Act, an inquest has been called by the Chief Medical Examiner of Manitoba. Inquests explore the circumstances and events leading to deaths to find out what, if anything, might be done to prevent similar deaths in the future.

Before the inquest begins, the judge will decide who can participate in the process and question witnesses. Individuals and groups may make an application to be granted standing and participate in the inquest. Those interested in applying for standing should contact Joel N. Myskiw, inquest counsel, at joel.myskiw@gov.mb.ca or 204-391-1565 by Nov. 22, 2021.

The standing hearing will be held at 10 a.m. on Nov. 30, 2021, in courtroom 408 at the Manitoba Law Courts Complex, 408 York Ave., Winnipeg.
