Statement From Sport, Culture And Heritage Minister Cathy Cox On The Observance Of Holodomor
Today marks the 89th anniversary of the Holodomor Famine-Genocide of 1932-33. As we stand in solidarity with the Ukrainian community, in Manitoba, Canada and abroad, we acknowledge the millions of lives lost to this tragedy and the community members who are still impacted today.
We are a province that proudly embraces a multitude of cultures, traditions and customs from here and around the world. Among those immigrating to Manitoba over the centuries are more than 180,000 people of Ukrainian ancestry, including my family. This community’s commitment to public education has kept the memory of the victims and survivors of the Holodomor alive.
By recognizing the universal values of compassion, acceptance and equality, we can foster a greater dialogue on the importance of human rights and can move towards attaining a more equitable and inclusive society. As we reflect on this tragedy, I invite us all to consider our collective responsibility to work together towards peace and freedom from oppression, and a bright future for all.
