COVID-19 Bulletin #545

The demand at COVID-19 collection sites in Winnipeg, and across the province, remains high. This is resulting in increased wait times for tests as well as test results.

The province has reached its capacity to process COVID-19 specimens at facilities in Manitoba. The current backlog is estimated to be over 7,500 specimens. The province is exploring options to expand laboratory capacity to help alleviate the backlog.

As a result, it is expected that the current COVID-19 case counts are an under-reporting of the virus across the province.

Only Manitobans experiencing COVID-19, cold or flu-like symptoms should seek testing. Appointments for tests are available at some locations as well as drive-thru, walk-in and walk-up options. However, due to the holiday season some COVID-19 testing site hours of operation may have changed. Check locations and hours before you go at https://manitoba.ca/covid19/testing/locations.html.

Long line-ups and wait times for test results need to be expected. The current test turnaround time is four days or longer. Manitobans are asked to be patient and kind to others in line as well as those working at the collection sites.

To further help prioritize testing, tests completed at provincial test sites are not valid for travel purposes. Manitobans who require a COVID-19 test for travel purposes should not attend these locations, but seek out a private provider.

This holiday season, Manitobans should continue following public health orders, limit contact with others, focus on the fundamentals to limit the spread of COVID-19, including variants, and protect themselves and those around them by getting fully vaccinated or going for your third dose as soon as you are eligible.
