Standing Hearing For Inquest Into Death Of Eishia Hudson

A standing hear will take place on Feb. 11, 2022, to determine who can participate in the upcoming inquest into the death of Eishia Hudson, age 16, of Winnipeg.

On April 8, 2020, the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) began a high-speed pursuit of a vehicle that had reportedly been involved in a previous robbery at the Manitoba Liquor Mart in Sage Creek. The vehicle was stopped by several WPS vehicles after the vehicle crossed the median at Lagimodiere Boulevard and Fermor Avenue. While apprehending the five occupants of the vehicle, a WPS officer discharged his firearm, striking the driver, Eishia Hudson. Resuscitation was attempted but the 16-year-old was pronounced dead in hospital.

Under the Fatality Inquiries Act, an inquest has been called by the chief medical examiner. Inquests explore the circumstances and events leading to deaths for the purposes of finding out what, if anything, might be done to prevent similar deaths in the future.

Before the inquest begins, the judge will decide who can participate in the process and question witnesses. Individuals and groups may make an application to be granted standing should contact Dayna Steinfeld, inquest counsel, at 204-809-5958 or dsteinfeld@ravenlaw.com by Jan. 21.

The standing hearing will be held at 10 a.m. on Feb. 11 in courtroom 402 at the Manitoba Law Courts Complex, 408 York Ave., Winnipeg.
