Province Announces Appointment Of Associate Chief Judge

The Manitoba government has appointed Judge Donovan Dvorak as an associate chief judge of the provincial court of Manitoba, Justice Minister Kelvin Goertzen announced today.

“Judge Dvorak has extensive experience in the legal community and as a judge, and I am pleased to make this appointment,” said Goertzen. “I am confident he will serve Manitobans well and I wish him the best as he takes on this new role in Manitoba’s judicial system.”

Dvorak was appointed to the provincial court of Manitoba in 2013 and currently sits in Brandon. He was previously appointed to the provincial court of Saskatchewan in 2018.

Prior to his judicial appointment, he served as a Crown attorney in Dauphin from 1996 to 2009, and was a supervising senior Crown attorney in Dauphin from 2009 to 2013.

He graduated from the University of Manitoba in 1994 with a bachelor of laws.

Associate chief judges are appointed for a non-renewable term of seven years. The appointment took effect on Jan.19, 2022. Chief Judge Margaret Wiebe requested expressions of interest from the court regarding this appointment. Dvorak was recommended by the minister of justice in consultation with the chief judge.

Dvorak replaces Associate Chief Judge Malcolm McDonald, who retired earlier this month. The minister thanked McDonald for his commitment and continued support in enhancing access to justice.

An official swearing-in ceremony will be scheduled in the near future.
